maybye he doesnt like the constant carb diet. I am a type 1 diabetic and I use a sliding scale which means I eat what I want when I want. I just need to count the carbs and match my insulin to that. learning the sliding scale can be tough at first until you figure out your bodys formula, im lucky I take 1 unit of insulin for every 10 grams of carbs. but everyone is slightly different. but once you adjust and learn your ratio you regain your freedom and for us diabetics freedom means alot. does he use a pump or insulin pens? maybye hes still needle shy, I use pens they dont bother me at all
Nana lamb has alot of good points in her answer but thats more diet-centric and I take a different approach, I think the common factor and key between our 2 responses is freedom and I truly believe thats what your grandson craves.
DON'T TAKE HIM JOGGING BEFORE HE EATS. his body will be burning sugar from the exercise and when he sits to eat and takes his insulin is at a higher risk for having a bad low. and its 100 times easier on the body to be a little high then it is to be a little low.
the best time for excersise is 2-4 hours after eating when your body and insulin are stablized
I do not like to be on a schedule either, but try some entertaining foods! You don't say how old your grandson is, but I go on strike and won't eat the junk people think should be good for me too. Like anything prepared from a "diabetes cookbook"! NO salt, NO fat, gritty grainy brown whole wheat or other grain!! All guaranteed to raise my glucose and taste blah!!
I do not know what the "constant carb diet" plan might be, but I eat fried eggs and bacon almost every morning, Chef Salads for lunch and dinner most days. half an apple with cream cheese spread or cheese spread for snackies.
I would prefer to "graze" all day, so some days I just lay out all the foods necessary to keep me going on the fridge shelf, and go by about every hour and eat something else. All these would be in the range of 10 gram of carb range. So I can eat 10 of them in a day and stay fairly level.
Small boys like "trees"! and trees with dips are cool things. Cut carrots (if he can have carrots) to 3 inches, slit the tops to be tree limbs, toss in ice water for a while. cut broccoli and cauliflower to be green trees and white trees. Ranch dressing makes a good dip, then add some chicken fingers or pork fingers, just browned cooked meats that are well seasoned work great. I make some steak fingers that are super!! fold deli meats and cheeses in half and roll them into logs and stick tooth picks in them!
I love the toppings from pizza supremes!! I don't eat the crusts!! Just the meats, veggies and cheeses dripping with pizza sauce!!
NEVER inject insulin until after meal when you know how much child has eaten!!
The best diet for any diabetic is six small meals a day. That means snacks. Many kids who won't sit down and eat a plate of food will be happy to snack. It will take a lot of planning especially at first, but it will be good for him.
Fear and anger over a life-threatening disease like diabetes can build up stress and lead to other problems. And even though it's worrying, you cannot force anyone to eat, and might make things worse. Once you find out what he likes, make it available and let him choose what to eat.
Diabetes takes away so many choices, and any you can allow him will lower stress for both of you. Take care.

Constant carb diet? Are you sure? Most people with diabetes have to follow a limited carb diet.
How old is he? Is he underweight? Have you talked to his endocrinologist about this? Is he snacking so that he's not hungry at meal time?
You don't say how old your grandson is.
How about going for a walk or a jog/run before the sit down meal.
Playground, soccer or football field. Ping pong, badminton, or something else that's active.
He'll work up an appetite.
Best wishes,
Bernie
Find out what his favorite foods are and teach him how to become a chef and make them using diabetic safe foods. He might really like that a lot.
