My 3 year old daughter wants her night light on in her room. She has never been scared of the dark or anything, so this is new. She sleeps in her own room all night with no problems. The only thing I have against having a night light on at night is I am terrified of a fire. We live in a brand new mobile home, so if it catches fire it's pretty much done. My daughters room is on the other end of the house (the home is 1800sq ft, so it's not a tiny home). And next to her bedroom is her soon to be baby brothers room. So those would be the 1st 2 rooms to burn. I am absolutely terrified of this. We do have fire alarms throughout the home, but it still worries me. She wants it on for the whole night, so its not like I could go in and turn it off once she falls asleep. She will just wake right up. (I tried this already). Am I being paranoid?

Just use common sense. I mean, keep the area around the nite light clean, make sure you are using the correct light bulb and that the nite light itself is not damaged. Make sure your wiring is good.
A night lite which is a small lite bulb could possibly burn but i dought it.If the bulb goes bad the wire in the bulb will break then there is no conection.Iv never heard of anyone worrying that a nitelite will catch fire.Things that do catch fire normally are things that are either old have bad wireing and produce a lot of heat like an electric heater. Even regular lught bulbs are left on all night. At some homes or businesses lights are left on 24/7.
If you are still worried about fire and she still needs a night lite (and its perfectly normal that she does) get a battery operated nite lite or small lamp. Maybe you can even get one with a light sensor that will turn itself off in the morning.Im sure you can find one any where baby or childs things are sold.
I was never afraid of the dark as a child, but still wanted a nightlight. When I was young, I had a glow worm (those things have been around forever!), and that's all I needed...a light I could turn on as needed. When I got older, I was given a battery-operated lantern that can be dimmed. Not a flashlight, because that's too bright, can't be dimmed down, and also it can't be stood up on a table.
Look for battery-operated lanterns that have several settings (low, medium, high). Several camping companies have them. These have guarantees and are very safe, and she'll have something that she can move around from table to floor to bed as she prefers, and at the same time, if there's a power-outage, you and she both know where there is at least one lantern. :)
Is there an outlet up high? The light itself shouldn't pose a concern. The wattage of te bulb is very minimal. The concern would be either something being left on the light that might burn (although I don't think it would with such a low wattage) or an electrical fire... in which case any appliance might cause.
How about placing the night light outside of her room in the hallway? As long as there is a smoke detector right outside of the bedrooms, you shoudn't worry.
Yes, I think that is a little paranoid. Have you ever witnessed or heard of a house fire started by a night light. If you are seriously this anxious about it, call the fire department and bounce off your ideas to them
I think the 3 year old has more of a chance at falling or running into a wall in the middle of the dark night.
My daughter was never afraid of anything. Now she is afraid of it all. I have had all kinds of night lights and never had a problem. I am not saying it couldn't happen. You could always turn it off after she falls asleep. Or we just installed a dimmer switch in her room. and one in the hallway. We leave to hallway light on all night, so she can find our room and the bathroom. So I would suggest the the dimmer.
Good Luck
You poor thing! I understand fear quite well. What you have to do is put into prospective the "possibility" and the "probability" of what can happen. Is it possible? Yes, because anything is possible. Is it probable? No. The odds are very, very, VERY small.
Get some extra fire and smoke detectors to ease your mind. A night light has very little wattage, usually 5 to 15. Allow her to have a night light and YOU sleep well. Everything will all right!
They have battery operated night lights...they are touch lights so you can turn it off once she's asleep. I do think you are being paranoid though...I had a night light for a long time as a child and it was fine, and I have one in my son's room now. The bulbs are such low wattage, and as long as you keep it away from curtains and blankets it will be fine, don't worry.
Great ideas from all! You get the best answerers! lol.
I would get the battery touch thing... that little dome "as sceen on TV" is available at target for 2-3$ Then she could keep it right next to her bed. Otherwise, there are those glow screen nightlights that plug in but have a little screen that glows green or blue, they have NO heat, don't really light your path, but at least look like a light.
We ALWAYS had nightlights. I have one now. but that is so I don't trip on cats getting water or using the bathroom.
I think you're being pretty paranoid but that's what moms are for, LOL. Our son's night light never gets to hot to touch and he knows he isn't aloud to mess with it so we don't think twice about it. If you are really that worried about it though have you thought about other alternatives like glow in the dark stars/planets you can stick all over her ceiling and walls, one of those round lights you can press down and the light comes on (they are battery operated so you can sit them anywhere), one of those wind up flashlights that never need batteries (if you wouldn't mind her playing with it while she is in bed), a night light that comes on by motion, a clock radio/cd player next to her bed, etc. I'm sure you can find something that will make both you and her happy. Good luck!
I think yes you are being a little paranoid. Get battery operated ones if you would feel safer. Or even a small lamp, they have many night light/ lamps that are very safe and don't even get hot. Just look into it and try it out in your room for the first night to make sure it doesn't get hot. Good Luck and relax!
