BUT--gerunds are -ing words used as nouns (things), as in the sentence "Swimming is fun." In this case, swimming isn't something you're doing; it's what you're talking about.
Present participles are -ing verbs used as verbs (actions). Mostly they are part of compound verbs. "I am swimming" is an example--in this case, swimming IS what I'm doing. "Doing" in the previous sentence is also a present participle. (Past participles are different, but with gerunds in it I'm assuming you're talking about present participles.)
Infinitives are unconjugated verbs, generally used in conjunction with other verbs. "I need to swim"--"to swim" is an infinitive. In English infinitives always have the preposition "to" in them.
