I am considering buying a 2002 Mazda Protege. When I went for a test drive, everything was good except one thing.
The car had not been started for two days and the engine was a little loud when I started it. I also heard a squeaking sound of belt. The engine also seemed to make soft knocking sound.
After 1 minute, the RPM came to normal and there was no knocking or belt squeaking and the car ran smoothly.
Is this normal for a car in colder temperature or does it seem to be a sign of a larger problem?
No leaks on engine and no residue (small deposits) when I rubbed enging oil in my hand. Also, timing belt has been serviced plus water pump changed.
Thanks

Some engines "Knock" on engine start up. This can result to burning a little extra to A LOT of oil, and maybe some expensive repair bills. I would stay away.
I would wouldn't worry about the rest of it. A lot of cars run fast when you first start them up on a "cold" start and the belt might a little lose, tight, or worn.
