Protein shakes help.?

Hi, I am 17 and I have friends who uses protein shakes/ powder and drinks them every day, around 2-3 or 4 bottles a day and they get buff. I've seen their physical change since last year, like they got buff and a lot bigger. I recently join the gym with them and wanted to get big too, but I have a few questions on protein shakes/powders.

1) Are protein shakes steroids? Do all protein shakes or some protein shakes contain ingredients that are in steroids?

2) I did some research online and some said some protein brands contains mercury. Would anyone know brands that are more safe than others, meaning it doesn't contain mercury?

3) are supplements the same as protein shakes?

4) What is the difference between protein shakes that contains whey protein and without whey proteins?

5) Is taking a bottle or a few bottles of protein shakes increase my height and weight? And yes, I will definitely do stretches to increase my growth. I also do understand there are many factors to my maximum height, but with protein shakes help a bit?

6) what brand of protein shakes contains the least harmful ingredients to our body? Because I heard that some brand contains a lot of harmful ingredients that can be harmful to our body failure in the long run. Any suggestions to safer brands? And for my personal safety, I am not planning to over use protein shakes, but only a few times a week if needed.

7) what are creatine? Are they bad for you? I heard that too much or creatine is bad. Any brands that doesn't contain this type of ingredients and any other "bad" ingredients so that it wouldn't hurt my body in the long and or short run?

I am planning to get bigger, but not to a degree like as in rapid fast. I want to probably intake a bottle a day or 3-4 times a week. Because sometimes I forget to eat certain meals, or my meals doesn't contain enough proteins. So I am thinking of just consuming it, to a degree that isn't harmful or too much into my body. I just wanted to get slightly bigger and not rapidly change big. And yes, I probably go to the gym a few times a week along with protein shakes.

Thank you
