The truth is they do nothing for anyone unless they have a terrible diet. And, if you have a terrible diet, fix the diet. Here's the truth about whey, as an example.
Whey is a by-product from milk created during the cheese making process which is dehydrated, packaged as a protein supplement, and sold to you for 10 times the cost just so you can go pee it into the toilet because you're body doesn't need it. Be smart. Save your money. I've been training for 40 years and never taken a supplement. When the best minds in health (US NIH) and sports medicine (Art Jones, Ellington Darden, PhD), this book's authors (Dr. McGruff and John Little) --> http://www.bodybyscience.net/home.html/?page_id=18 , etc. all advise to steer clear of supplements, I think we should listen.
Good luck and good health!!

For muscle growth. Protein is the building block of muscle. An after a workout protein shake helps supply the body with what it needs to carry out the task of rebuilding the muscles effectively. The body wants to adapt to the stress you’ve just put it under and it needs protein to do this.
I personally used Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Protein for 5 years now. Gained 30+ muscle throughout the years I've been weight lifting with the help of this protein. I usually take it a shake one with breakfast and right after a workout.
They help supplement your workouts by providing fast acting protein into your system, typically most needed post workout. Whey protein provides this since it's very fast acting (not all proteins digest at the same rate).
They don't automatically make you bigger. That requires a lot more than just slamming down shakes but drinkking shakes is just one aspect for muscle building. You could take them. I don't see any harm. Just follow the directions, which is typically 1-3 scoops per day.
I'm currently using 100% gold standard. Make sure to try and take a whey isolate of some sort instead of a concentrate. You get more protein in the isolate. If you need additional info, please visit my youtube channel below.

when you train on weights, basically what happens is you muscle get tiny tears. when your body recovers it build over there tears larger and stronger.
protein just maximises how much effect this has. You don't need protein shakes and wont lose muscle without them... having a lot of NATURAL protein in your diet (fish, chicken, turkey) is extremely important to muscle growth.
I use maximusles cyclone as it is the best uk all in one product.
I also recommend researching muscle group training when you go to the gym, to allow each sets of muscles the most resting time possible (day 1 triceps & chest. day 2 back and biceps day 3 shoulder and legs) and repeat with ab work every day... thats what i do and the effects have been brilliant.
the main purpose they serve is to give the body an extra source of protien little by little giving you more muscle
