I want to reinstall Windows Vista on my In-Laws computer, but I don't have any way to backup their data. If you install Windows Vista on a partition separate from the one with important files will Vista delete all of their files or does the partition protect the rest of the drive?

If you install Vista on Partition A, there will be no changes made to Partition B whatsoever.
If they have files on Partition B, they will still be there after you install Vista to Partition A.
Just make sure you choose the right partition! It's easier than you think to make a mistake with those arrow keys.
Just be aware that the Windows bootloader will overwrite whatever bootloader was there beforehand. So for example, if you had GRUB there before, it will get replaced.
If all goes well they will be separate. You should back their data up you say you don't have a way??? If you're loading vista they must have a DVD drive? blank dvd's hold 4.7 GB Sure you can back up!
