how can i tell the difference between what is a scotch base drink, and what is a rum base drink? and does combining them in one glass actually make you sick?
im thinking of vodka + coconut malibu; sickly combination?

well, rum and scotch both have extremely different tastes, so you should have no problem telling them apart. And combining them in one glass is a really bad idea. You don't really mix scotch wth other liquor.
as for vodka and coconut rum... you can mix them just fine. Here are some recipes:
Malibu Paradise
1 oz vodka
1 oz malibu
1 oz pineapple juice
1/2 oz cranberry juice
Alien Secretion:
1/2 oz vodka
1/2 oz malibu
1/2 oz melon liquor
shake with ice and a splash pineapple juice. strain (SHOT)
Arizona Twister:
1/2 oz vodka
1/2 oz malibu
1/2 oz tequila
splash Oj
splash pineapple juice
dash grenadine
shake with ice and strain ( SHOT)
Viper:
1/2 oz vodka
1/2 oz malibu
1/2 oz amaretto
1/2 oz melon liquor
1/2 oz pineapple juice
shake and strain ( shot)
Scotch Based Drinks

what? where does vodka come into this? Anyway - if you want to invent a new drink you just pour it into a glass and drink it. If it tastes good then replicate the process and consume the result. Then repeat.
