Hey guys,
I've been researching getting into cycling for a while now. I was leaning towards a 2009 Giant Defy 1 (still in the box so I'd have to put it together) for $999.99, but yesterday my LBS had a 2010 Scott Speedster S20 on clearance for $1099. I think I may be able to talk them down $100 or so even though the guy yesterday told me the price was rock bottom. Regardless, from what I've learned over the past few months of research it seems that this Scott is a great buy. Looks like it has better components (with the Ultegra RD) and comparable with everything else. The fits a little long for my torso, but my LBS has been working with me and is switching out the stem. Also, the bike will be fully assembled and I will have a bike shop behind me with free tune ups for a year and what not. I was hoping to get a few opinions on this. See below for each of the bikes specs and let me know what you guys think. Also, any additional input regarding other brands is welcome as well!

My vote would be for the Scott Speedster, since you said its components are a little better, and its fully assembled and including all the tunings, etc. Even if you weren't able to talk down another $100, its still a much better bang for the buck than unassembled. Unless you've worked as a bike mechanic, chances are you'll need the shop to do some minor assemblies/adjustments, if you had to build it all yourself.
Another note: If they are swapping out the stem for a shorter one, it will make the bike maneuver a little more responsive/twitchy, so consider that for the fit as well.
Giant Defy 2 2010
To be honest I would go with what feels most comfortable when you ride. They basically have the same group set ( Shimano 105 basically being the asame as Ultegra ) and having more of that 105 in the set will make it run more smooth instead of putting parts from a different group set in. So well yeah just see what bike suits you better and rides better and choose that one.
P.S The Giant Defy 1 looks way better :)
Hope I helped
The Defy 1 have best components than the defy 2 and the 1 is more lighter.
I don't think it matters. It's going to be very close in terms of performance. Go with whichever one fits better then whichever one is cheaper.
