I've only ever noticed this today. The pain comes out of nowhere. At first I thought perhaps something sharp was digging into me.... but that's not the case. It comes and lasts for a few seconds. Then it goes and comes again. It causes my back to arch as the pain is so sudden..then it goes.. and comes back.
Update:dreamer - I'm in my late 20's.. My period has just passed, but I've never experienced a pain like this before... it seems to have stopped for now. Hopefully, it won't come back.
Thanks all for your answers.

Heres two choices. One could be your gallbladder or two perhaps you have an ulcer. Being the right side Id check the gallbladder. I had this pain earlier in the month and I have an ulcer but they said if its on the right normally your gallbladder. Peace out...........
I just had this happen to me. My pain continued for about 6 days before I finally went to the doctor. My Doc said it was costochondritis, which means inflammation of the cartilage in the ribs. You can get it from strain (i.e. moving heavy furniture) or trauma. It's quite harmless, but really annoying and painful.
This diagnosis only applies if you aren't having any other symptoms (i.e. shortness of breath, painful breathing etc.) if you have any other symptoms you should go to the ER right away, as this could signal something more serious, like a pulmonary embolism or a collapsed lung.
you could have pulled a muscle or tendon and that hurts much like your describing and in that case just take it easy and it will take a week or two before it heals completley.
but go and see a doctor.
