There is violence among the criminal people, which is not most of the Mexican people. You can not judge an entire country by some news headlines or some people's personal experiences, kind of like, "don't judge a book by its cover". Like any country in the world, you will see more violence among the lower social economic classes, which is many of the immigrants we see here in the U.S., this is not to say that most of poor hard working immigrants are violent, just that the poor and uneducated have a higher tendencies to resort to violence. The drug cartel violence in Mexico you read about or see on TV is almost always violence among themselves, criminals fighting criminals. Of course, there are some innocent people also being affected, but it is in the minority. As for the normal people living in Mexico, often times when there is no justice or law to turn to, some people resort to their own justice regardless the reason, a bit like the wild west justice, not always and not everywhere, but it does happen more in rural parts of Mexico.
