A trainer once told me that replacing some meals with a protein shake would help me lose weight. She also said that soy was better for me (instead of whey) because it helped make lean muscle while the whey is more for body building. But I've been reading online and a lot of people say soy protein powder can be bad for you. I'm confused on what to do. Have you tried soy protein powder? Did it help you lose weight? Would you recommend it? And if so, which brand would you recommend?
Thanks

Hello Great Question:
Here is my take on the protein supplements and body building, getting/staying in shape and loosing weight.
Have done all the above at various times and combinations as well.
First basic rule of thumb to remember.
Any ANY food be it carbohydrates, proteins, fats taken in excess of what the body needs will be stored in our bodies as f a t. Yep sad but true. You could eat the most nutritious or lean or healthy stuff but the excess is turned to fat.
Second basic rule of thumb to remember.
A muscular body or the same weight as a non muscular body needs more energy even in its resting stage leave along active state! So the more of the fat that is turned to muscle the better.
So given all this the real trick to loosing weight is portion control, increase in calorie burning activity and muscle building, adding fiber to the diet in the form of fruits, vegetables and whole grain, plus eating a well balanced meal.
Now if you have total control over impulse to eat, and you quickly want to drop a few pounds and at the same time "shrink" your stomach a little in size and capacity via exercise and not stretching it via food intake. Then skipping a meal or going very light and substituting whey or soy on alternate days you could win big. But frankly portion control and balanced nutrition is where the game will be won in the long term.
Swimming and Jogging are great calorie burners, just keep hydrated and drink a quarter or half a serving of athletic drink (not a bottle full read the label for serving size !). But only use the athletic drink if you feel the need (in extreme heat) else water will do just fine.
Hope that helps, and keep the lines of communications open.
Remember its the person that is important, and that person is you.
All the best.
