Ok so I use Sony Vegas 9 on my mac with bootcamp. I try holding control and then left click to speed it up, but it just does the same thing as when I right click. I have switched keyboards and mice but still the same thing. By the way I'm using VMWare Fusion to run Windows in my mac.

There is a separate method of speeding up clips that doesn't involve holding down keys. I've never tried Vegas on a Mac, so I don't know how to solve your keyboard problem.
Right click on any clip and select 'Insert/Remove Envelope > Velocity' A line will appear across the middle of your clip. You can drag it up and down to speed up or slow down the clip. You can even double click to add points on the line to vary the speed.
