I got a BFA in that field + advertising and it took me about 5 years. Here's the thing about graphic design and related fields - the more education you get, the better and higher up you can work. An associate's in GD will probably just teach you software usage, and that's really not that useful without the real meat of design training. Getting a bachelor's in design is pretty much the only real option as they'll teach you real fundamentals of design, and that's really in art. A good design school will put you though art classes long before you go in front of a computer.

To get a really good education in this field, you'll want to really focus on it. I mean, yes you can probably get a job with an associates in design, but ask yourself, do you want to work at Kinko's?

Really it depends on the school. The software is probably a number of versions past what I used, but all the basic classes are probably similar. I had everything from the computer classes, drawing classes, a photography course, business, and a lot of other stuff. No, if you want to get anywhere with it, you really do need formal training in graphic design so you at least have all the insider understanding a person would need in that line of work. As well as learning what work, what doesn't, etc.
