I got a 1983 Datsun 280ZX NA coupe with the stock six cylender L28E fuel injected california model, I cannot figure out this part and what it dose and if it sould be wise to get rid of it. The description at best is a fan or cooling element that sits over the block from the passangers side. It only turns on after a long trip but yet it barely puts out any cool air heat or nothin. I have looked at a junked 2+2 and it's got the same part accept the 2+2 is a turbo and no its not the turbo becuse the manifold is on the other side of this wierd device. It looks like a factory instelation and I cannot find it in my Chilton and the car itself came with no manuel so I am right now tring to figure this one out. Some info or how it works or what it dose would be nice and no it is not the engine fan.

Injector cooling fan was necessary in the old days when unleaded fuel formulation would boil in the fuel lines. Vapor Lock was a problem and would cause long crank times and even stalling when very hot outside. That blower would blow air across the fuel injectors and ring lines even after the motor was turned off for a few minutes until the water temp switch cut it off. Today 15% ethanol may do the same thing today. Just make sure you use a heat shield between the exhaust and intake manifolds. Those air vents in the front hood are important too.
