So, this guy named Theseus went into this labyrinth, and there was a minotaur in the labyrinth. He was all like "Oh, hai mister minotaur!" but the minotaur didn't like him so they weren't friends. That's about all I remember.
Crete is ruled by King Minos. Long ago, Minos upset Poseidon over a bull, and so Poseidon made Minos's wife fall in love with the bull. The offspring of this bestiality was a monster named the minotaur. King Minos decides it would be an excellent idea to have Daedalus build a labyrinth too keep the minotaur in. Every seven years men and women were sent into the the labyrinth in order to be eaten by the minotaur.
One day, Thesus decided he would find glory by slaying this minotaur. He tells his father that if he succeeds he will sail back to Athens with a white sail, instead of the customary black sail.
So while he's there King Minos's hot daughter, Ariadne, fell in love with Thesus. Thesus convinces her to give him a secret of escaping the labyrinth by promising to marry her and take her back to Athens. She's all smitten, so she gives him a ball of string. This is the famous Ariadne's string.
Basically, Thesus ties one end of the string to the entrance of the labyrinth, and as he walks he lets the string slack behind him. He runs into the minotaur, kills it, and follows the path of string back to the entrance.
Thesus is now a hero, and while celebrating his glory, he forgets to change the sail color while sailing back to Athens. His father sees a black sail and throws himself off a cliff from greif.
Also, Thesus arrives without the company of Ariadne. It is said that he abandons her on an island. But later, the god Dionysus finds her and falls in love with her, so her life isn't that bad after all.
All in all, Thesus receives glory and a Kingdom tanks to his father's suicide.
