We are visiting nice in october and want to visit italy as it is very close. Is there any trains between nice and florence? I looked through the net and couldn't find any. What Italian cities close to Nice are recommended?

An easy way to go to Florence from Nice is to go by bus with Eurolines. For instance you can leave Nice at 5:30 am on 10/14/2008 and arrive in Florence at 11:30 am. It will cost you 45 €.
It is a little bit longer (6 hours) than if you go there by car (4 hours and 50 minutes).
There is no direct train from Nice to Florence but you can take a train from Nice to Genova (3 hours - 18€) and another train from Genova to Florence. For instance :
Nice - Genova (Genes in French) : 10:05 am - 01:06 pm
Genova - Florence (Firenze in Italian) : 02:52 pm - 06:53 pm
The train from Genova to Florence stops in Pise.
Hi, There is a wonderful hostel in Cinque Terre! Check it out on the internet! My daughter stayed there and phoned me (in Sacramento), and from her description, I vowed to go there. I went there in 2003, and it is all she said it was! It has a high rating. I also recommend you read one of Rick Steves' books on Travel in Italy. I don't know where you live, but they are in the bookstore. He also has a website, which has contributions by readers! He tells you how to get around by train/bus, what to wear, etc. That sounds like a good idea from return by Nice. I will look into that for myself. Best wishes, Maggie J.
From Nice to Florence is about a 24 hour train trip. BUY a COPY of Europe by Eurail and a copy of the Thomas Cook EURAIL TIMETABLES which you can usually find in any of the bookstores in any mall.
While you are at it... BUY some GUIDE BOOKS so you can read all about places to go instead of asking here on Answers where most of these people have never been outside the State they were born in, let alone know Europe intimately.
