Depends on how open your teachers are towards your beliefs about your gender identity. I can't imagine many teachers in california being against it, but there will be.

Besides, during state exams, you will have to jot down your legal (girl) name. Later in high school you will have to use your legal name for the SAT exam and applying for colleges.

I'd probably personally request an audience with your school principal and see how he/she feels about your gender identity. Because there will be other issues such as you using the men's room or the women's room to change for swimming or other team sports, or simply the usage of the toilet/urinal.

Legally speaking I think you would have to register with your birth name and your birth gender. That doe not mean the school officials should not honor your request to go by another name...many people use nicknames or their middle name as their prefferred name and they should respect that. I would have one of your parents talk to the school administrators and explain to them your situation and your request to be called Jimmy or James...

Do you see a gender therapist? You might want to have them speak to the school as well, you are awfully young to be living full time, so I hope you are doing this with a good gender therapist, I'm not trying to say you shouldn't be able to transition at your age but you need to be careful and high school can be a very rough place, your experiences during this time will impact your life for a very long time.
