The camera used to get ultrasound images is called a transducer. There are transabdominal (placed on the skin, outside the body), transvaginal and transrectal transducers. When we do pelvic or early OB ultrasounds, many times we will use a transvaginal transducer to better image the uterus and ovaries or a small/early fetus. Transrectal transducers are generally used to image the male prostate.
I am sorry that you were not forewarned by your ordering doctor prior to your ultrasound appointment. I would image that would be a huge shocker! You wouldn't believe how many patients are sent to us for a BE (barium enema), and they have not been told a single thing about the procedure. Some don't even know that the "E" stands for enema!

Transvaginal ultrasound.
What you are talking about is a transvaginal sonogram probably. They are very common and often give better results to your doctor.
