Ohkay, I have a family member who has serious underarm stains on all her white shirts. She's confided in me and I really want to help her. She's starting to have really low self-esteem. I've tried web searches and its either not specific enough or it doesn't work on taking the stains out. So what I want to know is what works from REAL people. Please don't give me a website, I want to know a solution that YOU'VE actually tried and works, please? So please give me a solution that you've proven to work on clothes to take out underarm stains. Thanks. :)

I have found that white vinegar does work on these stains. I spray the stains with vinegar and then rub a little iodized salt into the area. Let it sit for a few minutes and launder as usual.
What I have used and works pretty well is Oxyclean! Simply get the area you are trying to clean wet and kind of make a paste with the oxyclean (I always use the dry powdered one) work the paste into the area roll up the shirt and let it sit. (the longer the better - I usually let it set for a few hours to overnight) It really just depends on how old the stains are as to how well this works - it works really well on stains that have not been in the shirt for that long. But stains that have set in for years - it will improve but not be 100% gone. I don't like to use bleach, I find that too much yellows the fabric and you can only use bleach with whites plus the smell gives me headaches. Hope this helps.
well i bought a nice new white top, i washed it after wearing it once and when i went to go put it out to dry i saw the underarm bit had yellowy/brown stains. I grabbed some stain remover spray, sprayed the underarm bit and let it soak in for a couple minutes then soaked the top in some nappysan (clothes whitener) for a few hours. i washed it again and it was barely visible, you may have to try this again for stubborn stains. Be aware when you are using stain remover spray that you do not let it dry on the clothes because it will leave a yellow stain! Good luck!! Tell your family member she should also try a deodorant that doesn't leave any residue, this could help and she will no longer have white marks on black tops as well!
I have the same problem and it is really hard to get out. The best thing I have found it spraying full strength ammonia on the stains. Pouring boiling water on them will help soften them up if they are hard and yellow. The baking soda and vinegar has never worked for me. To prevent and slightly remove the stains when I wash white shirts I pour Bio Kleen Bac-Out under the arms and that helps too.
As for the prevention it can be hit or miss. If the problem is really bad not much can be done. I have tried the prescription products which made me break out. I also got botox and it only worked for a few weeks, so not worth it.
Under Arm Stains
If the shirts have been in the dryer you may be out of luck. Heat sets stains into the fabric. Try soaking them in a strong solution of OxyClean.
The stains are a mix of sweat, body oils and salts from deodorant. To avoid them in the first place, wash whites the minute you take them off. Don't toss them in the hamper. Sitting in the hamper or hanging in the closet allows time for the salts, oils and sweat to interact and begin the staining process. If you at least wash your whites in the sink when you take them off you will almost completely halt the process.
She can try different deodorants to find one which works for her. I like Dove deodorants, I have never had this problem from them. Getting rid of the stains is easy. Tell her to saturate the stain with plain old white vinegar, let is sit an hour, then just launder as usual. The stain will disappear. I promise it works!
Mrs. Stewart's Bluing is available at most grocery stores in the detergent aisle. Follow the directions when you wash. It's essentially designed to add a teeny bit of a blue color to your whites. Sound confusing? As whites get worn out, they start to yellow slightly (like under the arms). Blue, nearly opposite yellow on the color wheel, tricks the eye into thinking the white is actually much whiter than it is. If you examine extremely white fabrics up close, you'll often realize there's a tiny, tiny bit of blue or purple to it.
RIT White Wash is another option. It's from the dye maker, so you may have to go to a fabric store to get it. If I remember correctly, it's best used on the stove top. You essentially boil your clothes in it. The smell is not outstanding, but man the yellowing disappears. Follow directions on that one too. I imagine there is a washer option for that.
Fill a clean spray bottle with white vinegar. Spray the underarms of the stained shirt with the white vinegar on the instant after bumped off. Run the shirt for the duration of the laundry as familiar. Step 2Fill a medium-sized bucket with heat water and a million cup of white vinegar. placed the stained shirt into the bucket, and allow it to soak for quite a few hours. get rid of the shirt from the vinegar water and wash frequently to get rid of the underarm stains. Step 3Squirt a mushy dish detergent at present onto the underarm stains. Rub the detergent in, and then soak the shirt in warm water for 20 to 30 minutes. get rid of the shirt from the water and wash in a warm water cycle to get rid of the stain. Step 4Form a paste of one section meat tenderizer to one section water. Rub the paste into the underarm stains. the beef tenderizer will wreck down the proteins interior the sweat, allowing them to bathe out. Launder the shirt as familiar. Step 5Pour a reasonable quantity of liquid ammonia at present onto the underarm stains on the shirt. Rub it in thoroughly whilst donning gloves, and watch for 2 to 3 hours. verify to be sure if the stains are bumped off or diminished. Repeat the approach till the underarm stains are bumped off.
Okay, so here are her best options: Get a doctor prescribed strength deodorant for bad underarm perspiration. Another solution, I know this sounds weird, but Botox on the underarms. It is very expensive, but proven to work wonders.
For the time being, I would suggest applying baby powder under your arms for extra protection. Hope this helped!
