It comes down to personal preference. Please consider a sleeveless undershirt (tank top). The undershirt will not show under the v-neck sweater but will still give you the comfort and feel of an undershirt. The look is classic and the feel is wonderful. Hope that you give this a try and like it!
No, it's not wrong to wear a nice clean white v-neck undershirt under a v-neck sweater. In fact, it really boils down to personal preference.
Granted, some will say that a crew neck undershirt is more appropriate to wear under your v-neck, but I'd argue if the crew neck undershirt wasn't well maintained (dingy, loose collar, worn out), it wouldn't look good either.
As long as you are pairing a nice clean crisp undershirt with your outerwear, you'll be ok.
