Hey ya'll-I'm interested in getting my boyfriend a new sound system for his 2-door 2000 Ford F150 for Christmas (and to be honest, I have no clue what I'm doing)
A little research has left me even more confused. Basically at this point I'd just like to ask-do I need to replace both the front and rear speakers?
Do I need to purchase any brackets or cables ect?
What do I need to know about getting a subwoofer?
I'd appreciate any and all knowledge on the subject-thanks guys

You don't need to replace either set of speakers, but replacing the speakers will improve the sound. You'll benefit more from upgrading the front speakers than the rear speakers.
You need a mounting kit and wire harness adapter if you're replacing the factory radio. You don't need brackets to replace the speakers if you purchase 6x8" replacement speakers, but speaker harness adapters will make connecting the new speakers easier.
The main challenge for a subwoofer will be finding one that will fit in the truck. If it's not an extended cab, then you'll need a shallow-mount truck box that stands behind the seat; if it's an extended cab, then you may be able to find a custom-fit box that goes under the rear seat. You don't need to buy subwoofers by the pair; you can install a single sub. You'll also need to buy an amplifier to drive the sub (though you can find subwoofers that have a built-in amp). If you buy a separate amplifier, you'll need to buy a wiring kit to go with it. Amplified subs usually include the wiring.
