I'm writing a speech on why someone should become a vegetarian and I need a statement that "gains the audience's attention" followed by a statement that "relates the topic to the audience". This is an example that was given for an Autism/MMR speech..
GAIN AUDIENCE ATTENTION: Imagine having an 18-month old child. Your child is given the MMR shot containing a mercury preservative. Before your child turns two-years old, he/she has completely changed. Life seems to have slipped away. Was it the vaccination or something else?
RELATE TOPIC TO AUDIENCE: We have all heard news stories about whether or not there is a link between the MMR vaccination and autism. But is there a correlation between the two?
can anyone help me with something similar to that? thanks :-)

You could say something about all the health damaging things that could happen to you if you eat a very meat based diet (cancer comes to mind). Or something about how healthy being vegetarian is (i don't know for sure) but i'm thinking longer life, less health risks, stronger immune system. Try and scare them with meat facts.
Well, don't be like the MMR speech. Inaccurate information (MMR did not contain mercury) and degrading a group of people is definitely not the way to go. What's your angle for vegetarianism? If it's animal rights, you can gain people's attention by talking about animal slaughter, then relate it to people by asking how they'd feel if they were raised for food. If you're focusing on health benefits, you can start by talking about the increasing obesity rates (assuming you're in the US) and the related health problems. Relate to people by reminding them that some of them will become overweight over time, but that vegetarianism has some health benefits like less saturated fat.
