Verizon DSL and wireless router?
I'm looking to upgrade my mom's system as a surprise, including giving her wireless connectivity. I know she has Verizon DSL, but I've never actually worked with DSL. I've set up lots (more than I can to remember) of routers, but they've all been cable modems.
It'll be Wireless G;as a rule I've tended toward either Linksys or Netgear (not that Belkin crap). Do I just get a WRT54G and plug the DSL into it as input, or is there more to it than that?
I can configure DHCP and all that fun stuff, just not sure how a cable modem router interfaces with a DSL modem, if at all, or if I should be buying something else.

unless the modem is a wireless modem you will need to brigde the modem before hooking up the router. Also I would recmoend the LInksys as Verizon only supports Linksys routers. That way if you or you mother have issues you will be able to get help from there tech support.
I may be the first one who actually read your questions and added details. IF - the DSL Modem and the westell router are two separate boxes, you can replace the westell with any good router. Wireless routers today have both the wireless and hard wired capabilities, so you should not need to have a separate wired router. Simply set up the new wireless, and plug all your hard wired units into the ports on the router. IF the router is also the modem, you will have to check with Verizon to make sure any given model of modem/ router will work on their system. If you are renting the modem/ router, being charged a monthly fee for it, they should replace it for free. NOTE: A hard wire connection will almost always be faster than a wireless one. So when it is convenient to use a network cable, you should do so. (Wireless G is 54Mb, where as wired is usually either 100Mb or even 1000Mb) When setting up the wireless router - make sure you watch for a step to CLONE the MAC address of your computer onto the new router. This can prevent problems with security programs on some IP's by making the Modem think it is always talking to the computer and not to a router.

to set it up you re set the modem, with the router plugged in. I like MAC address authentication for security then hide the SID after she is on. line. you want to change the P/W and IP address. so it is harder to hack.
I know Netgear supports all of that I am guesing Linksys does too...
DSL modem will have an ethernet port, hook your CAT5 cable form the router to the PC and ther you go! You might have to log onto the router to set access.. most routers use http://192.168.1.1/ The default logon will be your user ID and password.
