Hi,
I'm having a problem starting my apache service on my Windows XP Service Pack 3 machine.
it was alright until today, but now the service does not start and gives the error that port 80 is in use.
i changed the port number in httpd.conf but nothing came out of it. i searched for Microsoft IIS service but seems not to be installed on my machine.
i tried to find out what service is using the port 80 using the command netstat -o through Command prompt but again there was nothing.
and by the way, a trojan has been detected on my machine since today morning but the AV software (ESET smart security 5) is not able to clean it. it's located in C:\WINDOWS\assembly\gac\desktop.ini
what should I do? i need to backup my databases before re-installing my Windows! :(

You need to remove the trojan, obviously. Not only is it harmful and will slow down your computer, it's also blocking port 80.
Start your computer in safe mode by tapping F8 repeatedly after turning it on, before you see the windows logo.
Select "safe mode with networking" and log into Windows.
Download MalwareBytes and run a Quickscan, then tell it to remove everything it found.
Reboot and everything should be working again.
Do NOT re-install windows: you will loose everything.
- make a CD backup (data) of all the apache directory (c:\xampp I guess).
- Try a restore at an earlier date.
- download and install xampp in another directory (ie xamppnew). Test it, then copy the db files in the new location to make your backup.
You can also restart your PC in safe mode (F8 while starting up): that will give you access to the drive with DOS commands...
Good luck.
Hi Vafa,
Are you using skype? There are chances that some software blocks wamp from running. I also experienced the same problem (port 80) and skype is the one blocking wamp not to work. What I do is turn off skype first then run wamp and run skype (if you also need to use skype).
