The hurricane season in the Caribbean is June through the end of October. If you are thinking of a cruise in the August September time frame you will be in the hurricane high season for Florida. If you do book a cruise during that time frame be sure to buy travel insurance; through the cruise line or on your own. However, when there is and bad weather the cruise ships steer away from it and even change the order of ports stops to stay in good weather and waters.
I suggest a couple other options.
1) consider doing a Mexican Rivera cruise out of California to places like Mazatlan, Cabo, Puerto Vallarta and/or Acapulco, etc. Hurricanes rarely make it across Mexico to the Pacific.
2) consider doing a cruise out of one of the many east coast ports to Bermuda. While hurricanes do occasionally go to Bermuda, its far enough north of the usually hurricane track that many hurricanes lose their intensity if they even make it to Bermuda.
3) if you just want to experience a cruise and you are on the East coast of the US then consider a cruise out of NY or Boston to New England and Canada. That cruise would be entirely out of the hurricane zone and September is a great time to see that area of the country and Canada; falls colors. Plus the ships doing that itinerary will likely have a solarium, a glass covered pool and hot tub area so you can still sun and swim.
If you are on the West coast consider a cruise to Alaska. The Alaska cruise season ends in mid September and the prices are lower in September than mid summer. No hurricane worries either and the ships also generally have a solarium.
It should be fine. Most hurricanes happen in June-July. Sometimes in September. But you should be fine. August is relatively nice for cruises. :) ENJOY!!

seriously- if the ship is large enough (like RC voyager) even with hurricanes you'll have a blast!
- i was on that ship and went thru 3 hurricanes! fun! we rerouted and went to other islands!
it runs from June to November. you can still go, during that time. just bnecause it's hurricane season doesn't meant they have a hurricane everyday.
