Mid 20s, Female... Navy or Army? My cousin tells me the military doesn't want women... So is it worth it? I figure, the experience, the benefits are worth it.
"Better" for what? Each branch has it's pros and cons.
"the military doesn't want women" - your cousin is an idiot. There are plenty of women in the military, in all sorts of jobs that do an outstanding job.
Each branch has standards for females, and there are certain jobs in all branches that females are restricted from (combat type jobs). So I guess the "better" branch for you has to do with what you are looking to gain.
Performance evals and promotions are based on merit...gender doesn't get taken into account. I was in the Air Force before transferring to Army. While the work atmosphere was exciting, nobody cares to hear a female try to get out of duty or have special considerations made for her simply because of gender. None of the branches are to keen on women using their gender to get out of work or have the job made easier for her, or accommodated for her somehow. Teamwork is the expected mindset.
Also understand that every branch (including the Air Force) it's mission first. We always hear about the Air Force being "family friendly." But at the end of the day it's mission first. When I was in the Air Force, I missed plenty of birthdays and special family events because the mission is first.
Depends on your interests. What job are you thinking you would want?
Are you okay with being deployed on a ship for 6 months? If so you have the chance to visit ports all around the world. You are also in cramped quarters with little or no privacy.
The Army has many women officers and many in some serious senior positions. And the Navy does have several women in ship captains. A women just become head of a Navy battle group recently. Army General Anne Dunwoody is a 4 star General. She's done over 30 years of service. So I think women are wanted in the Army. I know of several women Apache helicopter pilots that have faced combat by protecting infantry troops on the ground. Plus read about one of the Assistant Secretaries of the Veterans Affairs. There are currently almost 2 million women veterans in this country and another 1.5 million Active Duty and another 1.5 million Reserve/National Guard. Women have an important role.
Army has bases around the world. So you can live in Europe on their dime and see the sites. You can live in the US too for course. And still live in the barracks or post housing.
Since you are young I'd take as much international opportunities you can get. You can serve, get money for college and experience culture outside the US.
I think serving in either is a rewarding choice and I wish you luck.
Deciding on a branch of the military to enter is kind-of like deciding on what college you want to go to or high-school, if you had the chance to choose your's. If helps to decide what career you might on to pursue in life before you join the military and then see from there which branch can accommodate that career to your liking. If not already talk to a recruiter and take the ASVAB. Joining any branch will not be a piece of cake but I also believe that the experiences are worth it. (Benefits... well that's a different story. :-) ). Also, women, who can make the cut, are welcome in the military. I don't know about the Navy or the Army but there are things in the Air Force that women aren't allowed to do but there are plenty of other opportunities in all branches for women to excel in.
That is a bunch of crap that the military doesn't want females. Why wouldn't they? Anyways, there is not a set number of females that have to join the military per year. You cousin doesn't know what they are talking about. I went Army, never considered Navy.
I am a woman and I was in the Navy, but I like water and ships or boats, even though I was only on one ship....I spent more time on shore duty and going overseas. I was a Corpsman...and I loved my job.
You have to chose what is best for you. If you like the idea of being near a lot of water and you like to be at the beach on your off time, then the Navy will take you there.
If you don't like the idea of going out to sea for weeks or months at a time then you might consider something else.
It also depends on your job. That is the job that you will be doing every day and it doesn't matter what branch you are in, you have to like what you do.
As far as being a woman in the military, as long as you do your job it really doesn't matter. I think it has got a lot better for women. Most of the die-hard men who didn't want women in have either retired or moved on by now. Most younger men will look at you the same and expect you to do you job like they do.
I didn't have a lot of problems with men. I feel that it was a good choice for me at the time and I am glad to have served.
Are you set on one of those choices? Honestly the one that has always seemed the most women friendly to me is the Air Force. I've had family members in all branches but mainly grew up Air Force. I wish now I would have went in to the Air Force.
honestly it depends on your interests: if you like to fly,be in the sky or if your really smart than join the air force; if you like to swim, sail, any thing involving ships and water than join the navy; if you like more on land stuff than join the army; if your modivation and pride are above average, you like land and water, and your a bit more physical than enyone else join the marine corps. you know stuff like that

These questions make me laugh, better at what? Football? Drinking beer? Skydiving?
