Irish education system is not historically rooted in the British system. I have a site for you to explain the Irish education system. Irish here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leaving_Certificate
The British system is GCSE O Levels and A Levels etc. In Ireland they have their own system. It called the Junior Certificate and Leaving certificate. Remember Irish is compulsory. You cant get your Junior or Leaving Certifcate with out passing Irish. To pass both Junior and Leaving Certifcate you must pass five subjects. But most do over 13 subjects.
I think they have a lot of similarities because they are both historically rooted in the British system. In the UK, the government pays for university, so I like that system more.
Are you choose where to study based on how easy it is to get good grades? I think you can do well in either country. Both speak English, and you apparently do as well, so don't worry about that! You should choose a place to study because you are interested in learning more about the country and it's culture!
