I am a beginner in graphic design, but I want to learn myself, up to the level where I can make an impressive portfolio so I can be hired by companies who look at what you can do more than what you have achieved academically. I have no money for school, so I want to start studying myself. Which software is best for this? I'm looking at character animation, 3D, etc. I am a frequent user of Photoshop, but haven't ventured into the other Adobe products yet.

If you're on a tight budget I'd recommend:
For 3d:
wings3d.com - free 3d modeler
http://www.blender.org/ - free 3d suite
http://www.artofillusion.org/ - 3d modelling and rendering studio
Illustration:
http://www.inkscape.org/ - An Open Source vector graphics editor
Raster graphics:
http://www.gimpshop.com/ or
www.gimp.org
These days, you absolutely need to know the Adobe creative suite if you're looking to work at an agency, or even just in collaboration with a programmer. Every designer uses Photoshop and/or Illustrator, with additional knowledge of InDesign, After Effects, Flash, and Dreamweaver.
I use Adobe Creative Suite and enjoy the integration between Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. I don't use it for animation or 3D work, but if you like Photoshop check out a free trial version of the others and see what you think before you buy.
Adobe Flash, Adobe Illustrator, and 3D Studio Max
