I don't know how the one responder figured that homeschooling cost more than online. If K12 costs $6000 per year, then yikes!!!!
I've been homeschooling my kids for over 15 years, and I have never spent even close to that amount -- not even for all three kids combined!
However, to answer your question about which is better... well, that depends on you and your situation. Some people prefer the structure, rigidity, and accountability of online schooling. Others prefer the flexibility that homeschooling offers.
Homeschooling can be as loose or as structured as you desire. It can cost close to nothing, or more. We've used complete curriculums that cost around $250 and include 5 subjects for the year that are done on the computer. With such a curriculum, you can set your own dates for schooling, have the computer correct and grade your work, and even printout grade reports. If you miss school because of sickness or whatever, you can just re-set the calendar. If you get done earlier in the year, then your done.
We've also created our own subjects using library books, internet, etc.
The best way to get a feel for homeschooling is to speak with a few homeschoolers. You can do this by finding a local homeschool support group in your area (just websearch). Homeschooling has as many forms as there are families. Each one is unique. Of course, parents are an integral part of homeschooling. So which is better for you? Only you can decide that.
Homeschool! I was homeschooled for six years and loved it. It is so one on one and totally hands on. You can't get that from online! I learned A TON and my course was way advanced compared to public schools. Of course, it does cost more than online, but very much worth it if you are looking for a good education.
I personally think online school is the best because it gives you more structure and you will be motivated to learn. If you enrolled in K12 virtually academy you would have pay about 6,000 for 6 courses for a whole year. Of course you can take 3 or 4 for less money. What school are you planning on enrolling in?
It depends on what you like. My 10th grade daughter found out taking all her classes online without textbooks got old really quickly. I think a combo of online and text books would be ideal.
