These are two quite distinct schools. Neither one is best. Tufts is a little grittier but it has been the springboard for a lot of smart lower middle class kids from around New England to move upward in the world. Wellesley has been a school for kids from wealthy families for many decades. This does not NOT mean that Wellesley is somehow academically soft. They are not. If you just look at the list of women who have been educated there you will see a huge amount of talent and drive. On a percentage basis, Wellesley has far more famous graduates than Tufts.
Also, school is not just about taking courses. Wellesley college is in a beautiful suburban setting, while Tufts is in Somerville. :( Although it has gone out of fashion, the idea of a woman's college as a supportive breeding ground for women leaders is still a valid idea in many people's opinions.
Either school can give you a good education as far as classes are concerned, but there is a dramatic difference in style.

Tufts is stronger academically but the students are more nerdy and quirky and more socially awkward.
Wellesley is more focused on social standing and coming from the right families and social clubs. Very blue blood.
Wellesley is in a sumptuous campus in a rich suburban location and Tufts is a non descript campus in a working class city.
