Hi, I took my rabbit to the vet to be castrated and so they did a pre-op check in order to see if he was healthy and he was, and so they gave him the all clear for the operation to take place. So, I made an appointment and took him in and they did a second pre- op check to make sure he was healthy at the time, which he was. Apparently, his heart rate started slowing down when they gave him the anaesthetic and he died shortly after. I am really sad :(. I had read up everything in order to make sure that what i was doing was right. Is it common for a rabbit to die under anaesthetic?
Update:Hey Kim 2 thanks for your answer and I'm sorry to hear about what happened to your rabbits. My rabbit was 1 year and 7 months old and i'm not sure what aesthetic was adminstered although I did do work experience at that vets, and I saw that they didn't usually use gas as the anesthetic. Thanks to everyone for your support

First off, I am so, so very sorry for your loss.
I have had rabbits for over a decade so I know what you are going through.
Anesthesia is VERY tricky when it comes to rabbits because of their delicate systems. Do you know if your rabbit had gas or injection anesthesia? Gas is safer but also a risk. Was all of this explained to you by your vet? Also, you must see a veterinarian who knows how to deal with rabbits (considered "exotic" pets) as most are only knowlegeble with cats and dogs. It is harder to find one who does know about rabbits but they are out there. It seems strange to me that he had to have two pre-op checks which is unusual. Was he an older rabbit? All of my bunnies (I've had three at once) were neutered and had zero complications. One even underwent surgery for malclussion (over grown teeth) and he was also fine. In each case they were "masked" (had gas anesthesia).
I lost two of my three bunnies on November 3, 2007 within hours of each other. One was blind from cataracts in one eye for 18 months and the other eye for 6. He totally depended on one of my other bunnies and when that bunny got sick - he got splay leg where he could no longer stand up - and he died next to the one who depended on him, he only lasted about 4 hours without him. It was one of the hardest days of my life so I do understand your pain. Both were almost 10 years old and my other bunny who will be 10 in a few weeks time just had anesthesia two weeks ago in order to undergo an x-ray. He had an upper respitory infection and just finished a round of antibiotics and he is just fine. He was also masked and in and out and in my arms in less than a half an hour with no side effects but my vet is very knowlegeble with rabbits.
No one should ever have to suffer the loss of a beloved pet under any circumstances but something like this happening is truly unbearable.
My thoughts are with you and I hope you will be able to come through this very difficult loss in time. Just know that people do care about you and pay no mind to those who come here to make jokes or say awful things.
He has crossed the "Rainbow Bridge" but you will be reunited with your beautiful, sweet bunny one day and he will be in your loving arms once more.
that is always a concern with any animal going under anesthesia, despite the breed. Perhaps the vet wasn't really up on exotics and didn't know the proper dosage for the rabbit. That's what my logical side says, but as a previous poster said, maybe the rabbit's heart just wasn't strong enough to sustain the beat under anesthesia, or maybe he was allergic to some medication they gave him.
It's a sad truth but it does happen. Just remember the good times you had with your rabbit while he was alive.
Any anaesthetic is dangerous in humans and animals. I have had several rabbit and they have all been neutered and had other things done under anaesthetic and i have only every lost one . Which was awful but you just can't tell how an animal will do under anaesthetic. I'm sorry you lost yours it was just bad luck.
As VHD is highly infectious it is virtually guaranteed that any other rabbits that you get will contract it from the surroundings - even if you burn the old accommodation and buy new. It would be pretty pointless getting new bunnies as you will just be killing them. Please tell your sister this for the rabbits' sake as well as yours. I am so sorry that you lost your pets, and I am sorry that you are feeling so sad.
Poor you, it was too much stress on rabbits heart, the vets did all they could to prevent anything happening to your rabbit..
Rabbits get scared easily and he loved you though x
Rabbits, as with humans, can react in many different ways to drugs. He may have been allergic, he may have had an over/underdose due to having an odd metabolism rate, etc.
I understand your pain. I hurt with you.
