No music scenes really die, per say. Everything fades in and out of popularity, but somewhere there are always people playing the music, no matter how small that amount may be. Every single music scene, be it Grunge or Punk or Glam or Prog or Rap or Pop, goes through phases of popularity and then obscurity.
It didn't die - I'm sure there are a ton of unknown bands playing grunge and [ only not as well as then or maybe not enough media attention]
It just stopped being popular and people rather appreciate something from long ago, instead of actually checking out the underground music scene.
I see a lot of people on american sites complaining that there are no more good metal bands, oh woes me! where are the 80's, 70's?!? when I think this is the best decade for metal ever...full of awesome european bands [underground bands, not commercial mainstream crap] - there's even a full revival of glam metal in Sweden...
You just have to look ! Big labels will only promote crap anyways...
It's because when it got mainstream the fashion industry, the media etc. Killed it off. The music becomes redundant, how can punk be rebellious if people are wearing t shirts with sid vicious on it for fashion, Nirvana's smiley face and The Misfits crimson ghost as fashion labels for 13year old Miley cyrus wannabes! Wtf!
That will never happen to metal because parents are still scared of it
In order to survive for any length of time in the rock music industry you need two things, 1, Balls, 2 Brains. Punk had plenty of Balls but no Brains (sadly)
