In male/male fanfiction, writes tend to make a huge deal about height and size. They repeat things like "the taller man" and "the larger man," etc. I know it's a detail, but they tend to repeat themselves a lot, and now I'm curios as to if it's a big deal? I've just started reading these kind of stories, so I'm a noob, and I'm afraid that I'm missing a huge point.

There are a few reasons.
- so that the characters are described the same as they are on the tv show or whatever, making sure that they are described accurately.
- so that the reader can differentiate between the two during scenes. If you're writing het, then you can have 'he said' and 'she said' but if you're writing a scene between two males, you need something more than 'he'. If you just use 'he' all of the time, then the reader has no idea which character you're talking about. So, people use things such as 'the taller/older/younger/shorter man' to make the two characters easier to distinguish.
Because Fanfics tend to be extended story of an anime or cartoon by a fan. So since the original story is over a fan writes it and other fans read as a means to get satisfaction as if the original was still going on. Therefore they like everything in it to be accurate
It is because in yaoi or slash fanfics, there tends to be a focus on uke/seme dynamics, with the uke being the bottom, and the seme being the top.
Normally, the uke is the more feminine character, or the smaller, or the younger, etc, with the seme being the taller, larger, more agressive character.
I read fanfics a lot, but the authors don't use that kind of words to the point where people get bothered.
Well, authors do use "the taller man", but I think that's because it would be boring to use the characters name (or "he") all the time.
I think it is just so that you can picture the characters better and be able to imagine the story well.
I hope that helped a little!
