I am highly considering a move up to New York City especially due to the fact that I currently live so near by (a little under 130 miles south in Cecil County) That it would truly be an easy move. As I explore the many living areas within the 5 boroughs I have noticed that Staten Island has a lot of extremely affordable houses to buy the only thing is that its around 17 miles on I-278 East from Manhattan. The question I am asking here is, is that to far of a distance to live if you work in Manhattan ? is there any subway routes or trains that your able to take to get to Manhattan ? Can anyone give me any information on Staten Island, and in general why is Staten Island the undesired of all boroughs of NYC please ? as well where would a better place to live in the city be, I was wanting to be pretty close to Manhattan or in Manhattan rather, but, If I wanted to buy property there I would have to hit the lottery hahah
Update:as patrick star mentioned, theres a ferry ? so it goes straight to manhattan for free, how long does it take and what times of day does to usually run ? a website to that would be helpful than to list the times and all here na mean ?

People always make stupid comments about how SI is undesirable (this isn't anything against you). The only thing that could really be considered undesirable is the transportation out here. Getting to Manhattan can be pretty hard, and getting around (without a car) can also be pretty hard.
There is a free ferry from St. George to Lower Manhattan that takes about 25 minutes. However, many people take buses or the SIR to reach the ferry, and while the SIR is pretty reliable, buses can sometimes miss the ferry be a few minutes (like the ferry leaves at 8:00 and the bus will arrive at 8:02, leaving you to wait for the next ferry which can be 15-60 minutes away)
There are express buses that go to Manhattan for $5.50 (the local bus costs $2.25), and although they can be stuck in traffic, from most parts of SI, they are faster and more reliable than taking the local bus and ferry. You also have the option of taking a bus to Brooklyn and taking the (R) train to Manhattan, though depending on where you live, that can be as long as the ferry.
I hope this information was very helpful.
I honestly don't know, yeah there are bad areas, but bad areas are everywhere! Even in some of the nicer towns have their slums. The last couple times I went there, was very nice. I remember driving around up there and how nice it was. There are nice parks there etc. It is a lot more suburban than NYC. Maybe people think that because it doesn't have big shiny buildings everywhere that it must be a bad place, it's not! Yes there is a Ferry that takes you for free right into Battery Park. It is located right near the Baseball field. It is about a 20min ride so you can chillax and grab a beer from their bar for the ride. It's awesome!
