Only in public schools do they forbid teaching Intelligent Design because such "beliefs" are religious based. They teach so-called Intelligent Design in Sunday school & faith based schools. Parents who prefer their children to believe in Evolution are "intelligent" parents by my standards.
Edit: I want to add that Catholic schools teaches evolution because the Catholic church has come to accept that the creation story in the book of Genesis is more of a parable with a spiritual message & should not be taken so litterally.

A couple of important reasons:
[1] in the US, the constitution forbids the teaching of religious beliefs in public schools.
ID is religiously-motivated (see the Kitzmiller vs Dover case), and therefore is constitutionally banned from the school curriculum.
[2] ID is not accepted in the scientific community (who are, after all, the ones who decide what "current science" is). There are many, many competing scientific theories out there, but only ones which are near-universally accepted should be taught to school-level students (and acceptance of ID is at less than 1% among scientists).
[3] ID uses a complex understanding of issues like genetics, information theory, and complexity which are not accessable to school-level students, only to university-level (and even then, the mathematics involved might be challenging). "Dumbing it down" to school-level does not address the actual points pro-ID spokespeople are trying to make.
(as a side-issue, evey singe one of the points ID attepts to raise has so far been roundly disproved by scientists; but the level of scientific literacy required to understand how is also university-level).
[4] ID is not science. In order to be science, a theory has to be parsimonious, predictive and falsifiable - and ID is none of these things.

Firstly, I'd like to point out that belief has no place in science; you either *accept* a scientific theory or you do not.
Belief is based off faith, while acceptance only requires evidence.
Secondly, it is a sad fact that it is *not* the case that parents prefer their children to learn about Evolution. A substantial, and very outspoken minority of parents and activists actively campaign against the teaching of evolution in schools - which is the reason why there have been so many court cases like the Kitzmiller vs Dover one.
Because one is a science. The other isn't. If parents want kids to learn about intelligent design then the 60% of Christians who currently do not attend church services on a weekly basis should start, and not try and dump the responsibility for religious education onto the public schools.
Because evolution is a tried and tested theory, and ID is just wishful thinking on the parts of Christians. Evolution has mountains of evidence to support it, and you can teach something to children until it has been proven true, which ID hasn't.
Because "Intelligent Design" is BULLSHYT, that's why.
The theory of "intelligent design" assumes the existence of the Christian god ... what if there are Hindu students in the classroom? Buddhist? Atheist? Intelligent design gives no respect to their beliefs (or lack thereof).
The Christian god is no more valid than the Hindu gods, or the ancient Egyptian gods, or the Native American gods ...
Maybe they could learn about "intelligent design" in a segment about religion in general, where the students learn about the HUNDREDS of varying religions around the world ... all equally valid, all equally true/untrue ... but, in general, evolution is the norm because there's actual hard evidence, and no religious leaning at all.
If parents want their children to learn about ID, they can school them at home. But ID is not accepted as a scientific discipline by educators so it cannot be taught in a public school. Of course, private schools can teach it if they choose.
The courts quite rightly found that it wasn't science. Since not a single peer reviewed paper supports it, that is pretty obviously the case. What are they going to teach?

MOST Christians are not that dumb. MOST Christians know that evolution is a fact.
