I'm from Northern China, and I can't tell the difference between people from Hong Kong and Cantonese, but I think they look different from the rest of the Chinese.
Its just a matter of different places.
Its not only between Hong Kongers and Mainlanders. Even within Mainlanders, Chinese can still look different depending on the city/province they come from.
Also not only the Chinese, I think this happens to all cultures/countries all over the world.
Do you advise the way they portray mainlanders or unquestionably mainlander actors? If that's the former, then you relatively shouldn't take it heavily on the grounds that TVB tend to apply stereotypes to portray human beings of distinctive nationalities. American raised little ones? for sure they like a backward baseball cap and an urge for foodstuff for hamburgers and pizzas. Hong Kongers frequently do costume in a distinctive way from mainlanders. Do you bear in innovations the airport tantrum woman? in case you ought to not tell with the help of her accessory and mannerism (not announcing that it somewhat is customary mainlanders' habit yet HKers tend to be a lot greater conscious of ways they act in public), you ought to tell with the help of how she wears her hair and how she outfits.
Yes, there is a difference in their looks and behavior and most of the time, I can distinguished them apart. Mainlander Chinese, especially the way they act and talk is different. They like to talk loudly and dressed over-the-top with mismatched clothings. Frankly, Hong Kongers are more civilized and hygienic compared to Mainlanders. Sorry to say that but it's true. Mainlanders just got to accept this FACT!!
Have you been to mainland china?
Even people from different provinces look different, especially people in the north to the ones in south.
Hong Kong people usually looks shorter and thinner, the same reason as the tiger living around the equator area is smaller than the tiger living in the border between china and Russia.
Honestly for me, from their appearances, they look very, very, similar, although there are certain physical qualities that make Hong Kongers and Mainland Chinese distinct from each other.
Although I can tell you that they ACT different. Hong Kongers for me are different from the Mainland Chinese in terms of how they act: for me Hong Kongers are more disciplined than the Mainlanders, probably because of Hong Kong adopting strict rules for hygiene and cleanliness since Jan 1 2007. Even Hong Kongers, probably because of their history, consider themselves "different" from the Mainlanders: they see themselves as "Hong Kong Chinese", distinct from the Mainland Chinese.
(Note: I got this info from Time Magazine Asia)
The only differences in appearance between a Hong Konger and his cousin over the fence in Guangdong are clothes and grooming. Styles and habits.
If you really assert you can distinguish between Asian races by physiognomy, I challenge you to take the test at http://www.alllooksame.com/ You have to sign up for data interpretation purposes, but it's no big deal. Turns out that most people, Asian or not, can't tell the East Asian nationalities (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) apart in a culturally-neutral test. All the photo subjects in the test are pure-blood specimens of their nationality, but live in the USA and are not wearing their countries' clothes or hairstyles, etc.
I further challenge you to tell the truth when reporting your results. ;-{)

It's because the mainlanders have lived in a backward society for so long.
They have no concepts of how to carry themselves or how to make themselves attractive.
Only 20 years ago they were all wearing the same clothes, acting the same way (in accordance to the government), and saying the same things. They never learned how to match colors or designs, what goes with what and what doesn't, how to do make-up (for women), and how to look like they fit in with the rest of the world.
In Hong Kong you are seeing them right next to the people of Hong Kong who are very much part of the mainstream world.
They also tend to walk with less confidence or else overdo it. Basically, they are not comfortable with themselves and feel insecure in the outside world and it shows in their demeanor yet they want everyone to think they are very worldly and affluent.
In all reality, they are more at home in China where they can relate to things better.
not the mainlander and hongkonger ,but the people who live beside the sea , even among mainlander , you can disguish tell who is from north and who is from south , for example, the hongkong people and guang dong people look the same ,you can't disguish hongkong people and guang dong people i'm sure
The asian race is made up of lots of physical structures, just like any other race, it is easy for me to see the differneces between Koreans, Chinese and Japanese, check out the below link
