Each of us has an appointment with death. The question is, when. Blood clots can be serious business as they can travel to the lungs, brain or heart and cut off blood flow. There are treatments such as blood thinners and clot buster medications. A lot depends on what, if any, treatment that he wants. Some older folks decide that they have had a great life and dont want it ruined by severe illness and associated treatments and just...well, you know. I would clear my calandar and spend as much time with him as possible.
Blood clots are extremely serious. If one breaks loose and goes through the heart it can kill him immediately by causing cardiac failure. I'm very sorry that you are going through this right now, but yes blood clots can cause a person to die. Doctors do have several therapies that can be done. What you need to find out from your parents is whether or not your grandfather has been made a DNR (Do not resuscitate) or is a Full Code (Do everything to keep him alive). This will help you to know how much the doctors will do.
The doctors can give blood thinners to shrink the clots, insert filters to catch the clots before reaching the heart and the brain. If they reach the brain they can cause a stroke which can lead to brain death and paralysis.
Talk to your parents and tell them you want to know what is going on.
My prayers go out to you.
Robert.
Blood clots are very serious because if they break loose they can cause a heart attack or stroke. If they are blocking blood flow to organs or reducing circulation in arms or legs it can lead to problems with that organ or arm leg or whatever.
I am not a Doctor though so I dont really know what treatments might be available.
Ask your parents directly about his chances .
You said that he has something that causes blood clots all over. I'm certainly not going to try to diagnose, but did they mention disseminated intravascular coagulation? This is a condition that does what you have described. It is not always fatal. Don't give up on grandpa yet. Where there is life, there is hope. I'll keep him in my prayers.
