Sometimes when i turn my computer on it tells me that the system needs to run a disk check and that i can cancel by pressing any button, so i dont press anything because people say its a good thing. but now whenever it runs a disk check it just keeps saying "recovering orphaned file" and goes on forever and i end up turning my comp off, then back on and skipping the disk check. is the recovering ophaned file a bad thing? is so, how do i make it stop?

My advice is to let it run its checking until it has finished. Once it has done that it will not do it again.
Some background...
You know your hard disk contains files. You know files have names. However a file can have zero, one or more names. Most files have one name. Some files have several names. But you can also end up with files that have no name, these are your orphaned files.
The disk checked can find the orphaned files and give them new (but meaningless) names. You can then check to see if they're important. If they're not you can delete them and recover the disk space they're taking up.
Something serious and unwanted happened to your disk to cause these orphaned files, and possibibly it happended more than once. That might just be powering the machine down unexpectedly at the wrong moment. Once all the orphaned files have been recovered, watch to see if it happens again.

I'm experiencing this same issue. I have already given my PC 6 hours to run the Disk Check, but it seems frozen. Hasn't changed at all in 4+ hours.
Is there no program I can install and run (outside of doing it when the PC boots up) ?
I want to run it from my Desktop, not during boot-up.
I advise you tu wait for little bit of a while because recovering those files takes a long long time, at least 2-3 hours.
