Can anyone explain what adjustment disorder is? I have read alot on the web about it and find some of it is very confusing! My 10 year old was just diagnosed with it.
An Adjustment Disorder diagnosis is given when symptoms are not severe enough to warrant another more serious diagnosis and the person's symptoms appear to be connected directly to a life event or stressor with which they are having difficulty coping. Generally treatment is anticipated to be short-term as the condition (by definition) does not exceed 6 months in duration unless there continue to be enduring consequences resulting from the stressor (Eg: significantly changed lifestyle as a result of divorce)
The diagnosis is frequently given in the following situations:
-early in treatment when there is not enough information to make a more differential diagnosis
-to children in an attempt to avoid labelling them at such a young age where personality and behavior is quite malleable and subject to so many circumstances beyond their control]
-to anyone who may benefit from psychotherapy in working through some issues, but who's level of distress is not sufficiently severe to suggest a more serious diagnosis and the clinician needs to be able to bill insurance. An Adjustment Disorder is an Axis I diagnosis and therefore insurance must cover it-a simple V Code (like Bereavement, Parent-Child Relational Problem, etc. will not be covered by insurance and you would need to pay privately for therapy without the diagnosis.
I don't know much about it but I will share with you what I do know. Its a short-term problem that happens when a child is unable to cope or deal with stress or a major life change (such as divorce of parents or loss of loved one) its almost the same as depression but unlike depression, this is triggered or brought on by an outside event and will go away as soon as the child can learn to deal and cope and accept whatever situation has brought it on. I really hope this helps you.
adjustment disease is used whilst your having a confusing adequate time with something on your existence which you mandatory to speak to a counselor. no longer so undesirable that your are clinically depressed or different greater severe psychological situation. it extremely is extensively utilized for insurance purposes. which skill - the counselor has to place something down so as to gets a commission and adjustment disease is the least stigmatizing.
