I've been watching the PBS show 'Aircraft Carrier' about life on the Nimitz before we invade Iraq. What do the different colored turtlenecks that the crew wears signify? Rank or type of job? I've seen the crew wearing yellow, blue, red and green turtlenecks.

Note: Navy is interesting in that you don't normally pick a job or "rating" if you are going to be more accurate to Navy standards. Ratings (jobs) are generally assigned to you. The different colored shirts are worn on the flight deck because it may sometimes be too loud to communicate verbally, it's easier to reference by looking at what an individual does.
Yellow Shirts: Controls/directs aircraft movement on the flight deck;
White Shirts: Handles safety related jobs, including final inspections of airplanes and medical;
Brown Shirts: Plane captains that watch over individual planes;
Blue Shirts: Chock and chain planes in to position; drive the tractors that move the planes;
Green Shirts: Attach planes to catapults and arresting gear;
Red Shirts: Handles all weapons and ammunition;
Purple Shirts: Fuel planes; and
Silver Suits: Handles aircraft crashes and fires.
Sidenote: "Carrier" was a very entertaining documentary. I really felt bad for Chris Altice.
The flight deck crew's turtleneck color signifies their function or role in the on-deck operations.
