in your opinion , what song contains the best guitar solo , everything points out to Stairway To Heaven by Led Zepplin , i think its good very good but there might be better :)
Better might be a semantic exercise, as there are so many different variations of the art form. In the rock world, you really need to look at the body of work - although certain songs stand out, it's hard to point to one song. Also, the ability to perform at the same level live is critical.
However, Jimmy Page can well be thought of as the king of guitar solo's for his body of work. Jimi Hendrix would be a very close second - "All Along the Watchtower" a good example of his prowess; listen to Valleys of Neptune with never before released material that is just incredible. Makes you wonder what he could have accomplished.
Honorable mention - Eric Clapton and David Gilmour.
Warning: This is an opinion. You may disagree with it, but don't make a big deal about it...
I always thought of the best solo to be the one which really connects to you emotionally, such as Comfortably numb, stairway, etc. While something like Eruption is very hard to play, and was undoubtedly mind blowing when it came out, it's just basic pentatonic riffs and whatnot. Not to say Ed isn't a good guitarist though, the song right now "Right Now" is probably one of my favorite solos to date.
