3 people have a meal in pub it comes to £30 the waiter takes £10 off each person, takes it to the till and realises he has charged them £5 to much so he takes £5 out the till to give them back and thinks i will make abit myself keeps £2 and gives them back a £1 each so they have only paid £9 each, 3x9=27 plus the £2 the waiter kept = £29 where's the other £1 gone

i believe this is called misdirection.
each person has spent £9:
3 * £9 = £27 spent
£25 went for the bill
£2 went to the waiter
£25 + £2 = £27
the original amount tendered was £30. from this amount, £27 was spent on the bill and the waiter while £3 was returned.
( i can't get the little sign so i'll use $ )
Each man has $1, the waiter has $2 and the till has $25
Therefore 3* $1+$2 +$25 = $30
Every dollar has been accounted for =)
u have mistaken in the last part, it should be 3*9=27 & then u should add the money returned to the persons who had the meals ie 3 bugs.thus it makes up the total of 30
NOTE:waiter's tip is added in the amount 27(25+2)
this problem was presented wrong...
you first divide (30-5)....so 25/3....
and they have not spent 9 liras (inclusive of the 2 liras the waiter took)...
they spent (30-25) / 3 = 8.333333333333333333
8.333(each) x 3(of them) = 25 + (3 + 2)(excess) = 30
