Some of the dental assistants and hygenists at my dentist's office have them... and my SIL is an assistant and I'll be putting some on her later this summer.
The idea is to make sure they aren't long enough to poke a patient's gums or sharp enough to go through your gloves

No, it's unprofessional and hazardous. Unless your nails are very short, you will tear through the gloves and possibly the patients' tissue.
Dentists would never. And they would look down on hygienists with fake nails.
