I realise I'm going to hate some of the answers to this one, but watching Governor Palin's interview last night, she said she was quoting George Washington in hoping that "we" - the West - were "on God's side" in the war in Iraq.
I want to hear from anyone who actually, honestly, believes that "God" takes sides in wars in the 21st century about why they believe such a thing and any evidence that this should be so.
Update:Don't get me wrong, folks. Personally, I'm an atheist. I'm just asking - if you take it as read that such a thing as God exists - would he beggar about choosing sides in modern wars...

Why yes young fellow! Most of the fine people in the red states support me because they believe in that very idea.
Not only is God(tm) always on Our side, we only make foreign policy mistakes when Demoncrats are President!
Why wouldn't God take an interest in 21st century wars? Christians believe that God is interested in all the details. There's a verse in the New Testament where Jesus asks his followers (this is a paraphrase, people, so don't shoot), "If God cares when a sparrow falls from the sky, don't you think He cares even more about people?"
I don't believe that He controls every soldier, every general, every politician, for every minute and every decision they make. Humans still get to make their own decisions. What if God told a country's ruler that his country should not get involved in a particular war, and then what if that ruler decides his armies need to fight anyway? God isn't going to stop the war or stop the ruler or somehow prevent his troops from going into the war zones. He isn't going to stop any of the consequences that follow a decision, good or bad. But that doesn't mean He isn't interested.
Do I believe that Gold told W to send our troops to the middle east? You know ..... I truly don't know. And I don't want to make this answer turn into a long dissertation on Bible prophecy and what many Christians believe to be still in the future for Israel and her Arab neighbors.
But for believers, yes, God is interested in human politics and human wars. He has a plan for the future and a timetable for that plan, but He lets human decisions and actions control what happens next.
God is in control. Since you where watching ABC there is no doubt you were miss lead and lead down the wrong path. As a self proclaimed liberal it's no wonder. Her interview was hideously edited to spin out a contrived message. She was quoting a prayer Lincoln made stating we (Christians) should pray, we as a nation are following Gods will, not that we are doing Gods will. If you're so interested in a truth, watch a network that won't slice and edit context for their own gain. I know it's a hard furrow to hoe for you liberals but just try it.
When I was young the priest once told a story about Moses coming to God after the jews escaped and God was crying because of all the Egyptian deaths and suffering that occured.
Ah very good question. I hope that I am able to answer this to your satisfaction Falco. :) I have done a lot of wondering about that myself. My mother has often said to me “God is on our side because we are Americans.” (Gee I do love that “logic”.) But here’s the way I see it. If there truly is a “God” than he (or she) would want to be on the side of good and righteousness not the side of evil and wickedness. (Yes I know all people are considered “God’s Children” but sometimes your children can do horrible things – commit murder or genocide, rape, etc. – all “unforgivable sins” in the eyes of the “Lord”) And “God” – being “all-knowing” – knows who the good and righteous ones are, who has the most evil intentions in their hearts, and so knows who deserves him on their side the most. Does “God” choose sides? I’d say yes. Does that mean though that he is on America’s side? Not necessarily. But being an American myself, if there is a God, I certainly hope he (or she) is on our side.
If that were true then America would probably be winning the war in Iraq.
Also I think you mean George Bush not George Washington
Sarah Palin is an ignorant, delusional nutjob. What else would you expect a fundie to say?
A non-existent "God" can't take sides in anything. Non-existence makes it logically impossible.
I am atheist and I rest easy in the knowledge that the god particle will be found and people will wake up.They reckon 3 years in the LHC.
If there was a God, and that's a big "if", I doubt he would get in the middle of it.
After all, are we not ALL his children? How do you choose between one child and another (from a parent's perspective)
It's funny how god hates or loves the same people his children do
