does anyone know any safe home remidies i can use to help my dog temporarily. i cannot take him to the vet until friday and i would like to give him some relief before then. any help and any proof that remedies work would be very helpful
I am glad I can be of help to you today. I have a dog that got ear-mights about a year ago. Family vet told me to put a cap full of mineral oil in both ears, repeat in about 2 days you should see a result within a few hours. If able to rub around ear after you apply for a sec., is best he said. I had to to repeat a couple of 3 to times....lol....but it is cheap and it works......Good Luck
Note: The originator of this recipe is unknown. At this point it is a widely cited "folk remedy" which is highly effective in treating ear infections.
1 16 oz bottle of rubbing alcohol (pour off an inch to make some room)
8 to 16 drops Gentian violet (it's real cheap, but hard to find - try next to the Iodine at a Mom & Pop Pharmacy or ask someone to order it)
4 Tbs. Boric Acid Powder (also cheap and found at the pharmacy)
Shake well and for convenience transfer some to a small (4 ounce) "spout" bottle. Each time you use it, shake the bottle well to make sure the powder is in suspension.
The Gentian Violet will stain, so be careful where you mix it and where you apply it to the dog's ears.
If you're treating an infection, you want to clean the ears with this mixture on a daily basis. Otherwise from once a week to once a month is usually enough to keep the ears healthy.
You have to be sure it's mites. Alot of people mistake ear infections for mites. Ear mite meds have alcohol in them and can inflame an ear infection even more. There are different types of ear infections, and they can require different meds for treatment. Clean his ears with a warm wet rag to give him some temporary relief. Don't clean them for a few days before you go to the vet. They will need to take sample swabs of the discharge to look at & see if it is mites or an infection. Earmites cause a dry crumbly discharge that looks like used coffee grounds, while an infection may be a green or yellow looking discharge with a foul odor.
Vinegar also works. Dip a cotton ball in vinegar (do not saturate) and gently clean the dogs ear out. IF you use anything in his ear that is not medicine and leaves his ear wet, you will need to use a tissue or TP to remove excess wetness. Water in the ear canal doesn't help matters.

It is rare for a dog to get ear mites, unless you have a cat that has them and is around him. He probably has an ear infection.
You can get ear mite medicine at Wal-Mart, it's fairly cheap also.
