okay so the fox has white fur in snowy conditions and red in warm conditions. Is their something something happening in their genes like are they switching on and off due to their environment? If so, is this same switching on and off of genes also the reason why caterpillars transform into butterflies? I thought whatever genome you have was permanently determined when your born. Can someone please explain????
Update:yes Eric i know that already, but how exactly does a fox's fur go from red in one season and all of the sudden white in the next????????

The genome is permanent at birth (except for cancer and viruses you acquire as you age); however, the combination of genes that are turned "on" at any given time may change. Different cells have different genes turned on, and different genes are turned off--some are turned off in certain cells permanently.
A red fox turning white in winter is not the same as a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. Changing hair color is most likely the result of one or two genes being turned on "high" or "low" settings. A caterpillar turning into a butterfly is the result of homeotic development, like when a fetus turns cells into arms and legs--once it is done the genes controlling that process are turned off for the rest of your life.
It's called survival of the fittest whereas there is overeproduction, variation, competition, and survival.
Let's say there is a community of red and white fox in snowy places. These foxes reproduce, but some might inherit the white and others red. When they grow up, red foxes are more vulnerable than white, since white foxes camouflage to the snow. So red fox population slowly dies because they are hunted more, than white foxes. Whichever the one has the better variation survives and reproduces.
Same goes to the red foxes on warm places.
In the case of butterflies, it's more efficient having a metamorphisis, so that the catterpillar and butterlies won't fight for food. It's the better adaptation, so metamorphosis is still present today.
The reason why foxes have white fur in snowy areas is because they can blend in with the snow better there. Therefore they can hide from predators so they'll live longer, reproduce, and pass on the gene for white fur to their children
What if you move the first letter 's' from switches and moved it one space back and connect it to the last letter of the word 'genetic' while putting apostrophe in between them.
