I've always loved latin culture and longed to be a part of it, I am the only person in my familiy who speaks Spanish.
I have loads of Mexican friends who refer to me as "la gringa mexicana."
I'm confused, because I thought that the term "gringo" only applied to white anglo-saxon Americans. Nothing wrong with that... it's just that I'm of British and European Spanish descent. Would the term "gringa" apply to me?
Why do people think I don't have Spanish ancestry?
Would this term apply to me, or do people just think that I'm not of Spanish descent?
I identify with the Mexican culture (I lived there once and hopefully will live there again in the future) as well with latin culture in general (particularly the culture of Spain, in spite of the fact that I've never been. In spite of the fact that I have loads of Mexican friends, I feel like an outsider.
If I'm mixed European (Spanish, British, French, etc)... wouldn't I be considered Hispanic? Or just mixed?
Why are people always assuming I don't have latin descent? I want people to know, but I feel foolish telling them because no one believes me.
I grew up in USA but always felt like I didn't belong... my parents speak only English and I had to bend over backwards to learn Spanish because no one would teach me.

Cariño, the way they say it sounds caring to me. Don´t worry about your family mix. The South-Central Americans take Hispanic just for themselfs, in most cases not even for Spaniards. Most probably some northern influence (english?) is clearly seen in you:redish hair, very pale skin? Or maybe it is just your US passport. Don´t feel bad about it. You are who you are, e ven with an accent in your Spanish.
Just don´t care too much about it. I myself will allways be "guiri" here in Spain, most probably because I can´t get rid of an accent (being German, but often asked if I am French) and for speaking a too clear Castillano, without leaving letters aside (comprando insted of speaking compao). But my teachers were from Asturias, where they speak a very clear Castellano.
Just don´t care, and don´t explain too much. This will make the others making fun of you.
Just enjoy your time there and your friends!
The European Spanish don't always look exactly the same as south American Spanish like Mexicans. Most Europeans are not one European ethnicity but a mix, most people don't look like one nationality. And not all Spanish are dark.
