Hmmm I'm sure there are some punk rockers out there who do not know the chords, that got started at an advanced age, and got famous... not sure who though... :)
I think people tend to get too hung up on this starting early thing. Learning guitar is not a linear process. Most guys I know that have been playing 30 - 40 years reached a level very close to where they are now in the first 10 years of playing and then slowly progressed a little from there. Of course it is different for everyone and I'm not talking about rock stars, just good local players.
