i've seen quite a number of cars that have german plate numbers under their philippine plates; can anyone tell me the story behind this?

Some people, display plates from other countries aside from the legal license plate just to show off that they have them. Kind of social status, or to be seen as someone who has been there in the land far away.
Are you talking about the little "D" with the EU stars on the left side of the plate?
It is like a fashion all over asia (have seen it in Thailand, Cambodia, Philippines,....) and has become popular during the world cup in Germany.
I doubt that in the Philippines are more than 5 cars with real german plate numbers (registered in Germany), so I guess you're talking about the "D" on the Philippino plate.
I understand that you can buy them... would like to have one myself, coz I happen to have an EU CZ sticker instead of the common D.
As to why, people feel that a Southeast Asian Toyota (without a heater) is somehow a fancy car.
